Motorcyclists like you understand that you face a higher rate of risk for physical injury than almost any other driver on the road. This is due to the compact size of your vehicle of choice, along with the lack of outer protection that covered vehicle drivers have.
This is also why it is so crucial for you to sport the proper protective equipment when you hit the road. After all, a helmet can make the difference between a serious incident and one you can recover from.
Room to improve?
The National Library of Medicine looks at some of the protective effects helmets may provide. The study actually notes that helmets do not protect the head from all injuries equally, and it primarily argues that improvements can still happen to increase the overall effectiveness of the helmet.
Helmets still greatly reduce head injury
However, it is inarguable that wearing a helmet will always provide more protection than not wearing anything at all, even if there is room for improvement. Helmets offer protection against cerebral contusion, skull fractures, intracranial hemorrhage, and cerebral concussion specifically. Though a rough estimate of 20 percent risk reduction surfaced in results, they reduced the risk for certain dangers more than others.
For example, skull fractures saw a 69 percent reduction while cerebral contusions saw a 71 percent reduction. On the other hand, intracranial hemorrhage saw a 53 percent reduction. While there is still room for improvement in these numbers, any reduction of risk is better than none at all. In summation, wearing a helmet is still crucial for your safety even if it cannot prevent all injuries.
